How to Stop Snoring?

One of the most common problems in the world is snoring. Many people do not perceive it as a serious disorder. During snoring, a person’s airways are partially blocked, making it difficult for air to flow. Snoring can be a serious problem, such as sleep apnea.

If you wake up feeling tired and lacking energy in the morning, it could be because you have sleep apnea (among many other reasons). Sleep apnea is a condition in which you stop breathing during sleep. Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, shortness of breath during sleep, waking up with a dry mouth, irritability, lack of concentration when awake, headaches in the morning, etc.

As of 2020, this problem affects 22 million people in the United States. When a person falls asleep and their body relaxes, the throat also begins to relax. This leads to a narrowing of the airway, during which the person makes the characteristic sounds of snoring. During sleep apnea, breathing is blocked, and many people do not even realize that they have this problem.

Sleep apnea is a serious health problem that can lead to further complications (high blood pressure/heart problems, type 2 diabetes, liver problems, etc.).

If you snore heavily and it bothers you, our dental clinic offers an innovative way to solve this serious problem – read the blog and learn what this procedure involves and how it helps you.

What is a mandibular correction device – MAD?

MAD is an oral appliance for the treatment of snoring. It helps to lift your lower jaw forward while you sleep, opening up your airway. MAD connects the upper and lower parts of your mouth, allowing your lower jaw to be lifted forward and held in the correct position.

In our clinic, the mandibular advancement device is individually manufactured in Germany and is adapted to the specific shape of the oral cavity. The device is made of soft material, which becomes more practical when exposed to hot water. The softness of the device helps the user to use the device as comfortably as possible and adapts to the anatomy of the mouth.

Warning: MAD is not recommended for those who wear dentures or have severe dental problems.

Benefits of MAD

The main benefit of MAD is the reduction of snoring and sleep apnea. A 2000 study, in which 22 participants wore MAD for 12-30 months, showed that sleep apnea and snoring were significantly reduced after using the device.

Who should undergo MAD?

MAD is for people who:

  • have confirmed mild or moderate sleep apnea;
  • They have mandibular retrognathia (a lower jaw that protrudes backward);
    Are you bothered by snoring?
  • They prefer non-invasive treatment methods and avoid surgical intervention;
  • Have healthy teeth and a properly positioned lower jaw structure;
  • Have positional sleep apnea (a condition that worsens when sleeping on your back and improves when you turn over on your side).

Who should not have MAD?

MAD is less effective for the following categories of people:

  • Elderly people;
  • People who are concerned about being overweight and having excess fat in the neck area;
  • People who have a stiff lower jaw that prevents the jaw from being pushed forward;
  • People who have dental problems, such as gingivitis ;
