Gnathology is the science of harmony between the jaw, teeth, and muscles. Jaw pain, chewing discomfort, headaches – all of these might come from TMJ disorder. TMJ is temporomandibular joint. TMJ connects your jaw to your skull.
When this system is not in harmony, it can cause a wide range of issues — from jaw pain and headaches to uneven tooth wear or even facial asymmetry.

At Richter’s Clinic, our specialists use advanced diagnostic technology to understand how your bite functions and to restore its natural balance.
Many people live with symptoms they don’t connect to their bite. Common signs you shouldn’t ignore:
Chronic jaw tension or *clicking* sounds when opening mouth
Morning headaches or neck stiffness
Uneven or rapidly worn teeth
Discomfort while chewing
Aesthetic changes in facial shape
These signs might indicate a functional imbalance in your jaw joint (TMJ) — and gnathological treatment can address the root cause, not just the symptoms. A doctor that specializes in this is gnathologist.
A gnathologist is a dental specialist who studies how your teeth, jaw joints, and muscles work together. Unlike general dentists, gnathologists focus on the function and harmony of the bite — analyzing how even small imbalances can lead to pain, muscle tension, or facial asymmetry.
At Richter’s Clinic, our gnathologist combines advanced diagnostics with personalized treatment to restore comfort, stability, and natural balance to your bite and appearance.

While orthodontists focus mainly on tooth alignment and smile aesthetics, a gnathologist studies the function and balance of the entire chewing system — including the jaw joints and muscles.
At Richter’s Clinic, these two disciplines work hand in hand: our orthodontic treatments are planned with gnathological precision to achieve not only a beautiful smile but also a healthy, stable, and pain-free bite.
At Richter’s Clinic, we combine precision diagnostics of gnathology problems with individualized care.
Our gnathology program includes:
3D jaw joint analysis and digital bite registration
Customized occlusal splints for bite correction and muscle relaxation
Collaboration with orthodontists, prosthodontists, and maxillofacial surgeons for comprehensive treatment
Posture and muscle balance evaluation, because the jaw affects your whole body
Our goal is not just to relieve discomfort — but to restore harmony between function and aesthetics.

Standard articulator and facebow, mainly Amann Girrbach (Austria) brand.
Requires CBCT scan (jaw joints with closed mouth). Sometimes also MRI of the TMJ (open/closed mouth).
Can optionally use advanced tools like condylograph/axiograph, but it depends on the case.
Splint therapy is used (custom plastic occlusal splint on upper or lower jaw).
The goal is to find the correct lower jaw position where muscles and joints work harmoniously.
Splint therapy is mostly diagnostic, not the final treatment. Once the ideal position is found, the jaw must be fixed in that position through:
Orthodontics (teeth movement), and/or
Prosthodontics (crowns, overlays, etc.).
Analogy:
“We can compare splint therapy to orthopedic insoles — like how insoles correct the body posture, splints help balance the bite and TMJ.” – Giorgi Maziashvili, gnothologist at Richter’s Clinic
Splints often improve comfort, muscle function, and facial aesthetics (profile sometimes changes slightly).
Clicking sounds in joints don’t always disappear but often reduce.
In very rare situations some patients do not feel improvement, mostly due to psychological or stress-related factors.
Long-term results depend on completing orthodontic or prosthetic correction after splint therapy.
Gnathology shall not be considered as a separate medical specialty — it’s part of orthodontics or prosthodontics. The doctor-gnatholist is recommended to practice both.
Gnathology can help if you:
Experience pain or clicking in the jaw
Wake up with tightness in the jaw or temples
Have been treated with veneers, crowns, or implants but still feel bite discomfort
Notice that your face shape or smile has subtly changed over time
Many patients find that after gnathological treatment, headaches disappear, muscles relax, and their facial symmetry improves — often with a visible rejuvenation effect.

Richter’s Clinic is one of the few centers in Georgia offering a full gnathology program with European-level diagnostic equipment and multidisciplinary expertise.
